ANDRÉ FOURNELLE : LIGNE D'OR / LIGNE DE VIE

On the Darling Foundry's Place Publique, André Fournelle presents a work that stresses the alchemy of elements. It is a performance, entitled Ligne d'or / Ligne de vie, giving shape to a monumental, 9-meter long, bronze casting. Orchestrated by the artist and the master founders of Inverness, it will take place on Saturday, March 3, at 10 pm, and will be on view until midnight.

The casting takes its origin in a furnace and is poured live in a steel gutter covered with golden leaves, itself embedded in a tub filled with charcoal. A blue line of light is projected diagonally onto the gutter. Mixing a cool light with metal in fusion, the work thus connects the former industrial foundry and the Darling Foundry art centre. Besides, it invites the audience to witness a metamorphosis of elements which is usually beyond the reach of public eyes. This performance echoes the exhibition Drinkers of Quintessences, presented inside the Darling Foundry, that will be exceptionally open from noon to midnight.

André Fournelle's career began in the 1960s in an industrial foundry akin to the Darling Foundry, similarly located in the Old Montreal. The artist then created his own art foundry, conceived as a vehicle for experimentation. Fascinated by light, fire and fusion, Fournelle favors materials which are inflammable, fusible or light-based in works that are often multidisciplinary, combining sculpture, installation, architecture and performance. Beyond their intrinsic aesthetic qualities, these materials allude, in the artist's eyes, to the cycles of life.
