VIKKY ALEXANDER: NORDIC ROCK

CLICK HERE TO VISIT IN ANOTHER WINDOW

Vikky Alexander presents an invaluable sculptural and photographic installation that clashes with the industrial setting of the Main Hall. In a staggered arrangement, fragile and iridescent reproductions of design furniture, made of dichroic glass, enter into a dialogue with two imposing mural-sized vinyls of photo collages composed of images gleaned from fashion and design magazines. Through the distortion of scale, play of lightand games of make-believe orchestrated, Nordic Rock mimics marketing strategies of appropriating and substituting nature used by luxury and real estate industries to address themes of desire and commodification, and the ways in which society projects us into these unreal environments.

MICHAEL EDDY: JE SUIS

CLICK HERE TO VIEW IN ANOTHER WINDOW

For his first dedicated solo show in Canada, Halifax-born artist Michael Eddy presents a contrasting installation that defies any hasty or simplistic interpretation. A series of printson Tyvek, inspired by medieval woodcuts and political cartoons, presents scenes of contemporary life to critique pretension touniversality, neoliberal values and North-American plutocracy. Punctuating the space already charged with double meaning, two videos evoking snuff movies and soft porn aesthetics complexify discourses on identity, desire and what is forbidden. Through the images shown, Eddy lays the groundwork for reflecting on the freedom of speech in democratic dialogue, what is permissible, or simply acceptable to say, write, or show.
