Ghislain Brown-Kossi
Combining painting, sculpture, and installation, Ghislain Brown-Kossi develops a visual language in which memory, belonging, and perception emerge from the physical qualities of materials, the tension they create, and their interactions within space. By exploring how matter, structure, and spatial relationships can convey meaning without resorting to narrative or explicit symbolism, his work has gradually shifted from a focus on symbolism to a practice in which restraint, compression, rhythm, and material presence become the primary vehicles of meaning.
During this residency, Brown-Kossi hopes to further her research into constructing a new visual vocabulary capable of generating open forms, where meaning is no longer imposed but constructed through the encounter between the artwork, the space, and the viewer. More than just a period of production, the artist views this residency as a research laboratory where each experiment contributes to establishing the grammar of a language destined to unfold in murals, suspended installations, and interventions on an architectural scale. The ambition is not to produce a predetermined series of works, but to lay the foundations for a practice that can be sustained over the coming years, while deepening the connections between material, architecture, and human experience.
Biography
Based in British Columbia, Ghislain Brown-Kossi is a French-Canadian artist of French-Ivorian descent whose interdisciplinary practice explores the relationships between memory, materiality, and perception. His work has been featured in numerous exhibitions in Canada and is included in public and private collections. Invited to design and present several installations in public spaces, he is currently pursuing research focused on developing a visual language where material, architecture, and human experience converge.
