Significant Other
Significant Other colloquially stands for a gender-neutral term for a partner in an undefined intimate relationship. In psychology for any person who has great importance to an individual’s life or well-being and in sociology for any instance with a strong influence on one’s self-concept. As a curatorial practice and project space currently based in Vienna, Significant Other [SO] understands its way of thinking and acting in an analogical manner. Be it exhibitions, writing, or public program SO looks at mutually influential relations, symbiotic, same as destructive ones. Currently SO is focusing on the web of connections between contemporary art and architecture while simultaneously approaching cultural and historical binaries. Be it the struggle of what constitutes private and public spheres, continuing differences between former East and West as well as across institutional tropes and hierarchies. This strategy allows SO to identify and exploit points of friction and potential alike.
