Announcement of the 2023 Darling Newhaven laureates

Fonderie Darling and Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop are excited to announce the artists selected to be the first year’s Darling Newhaven residents are Alexia Laferté-Coutu, representing Quebec and Camara Taylor, representing Scotland.

Alexia Laferté-Coutu lives and works in Montreal. Her sculptures and assemblages reveal a dialog between constructed histories and somatic, sensorial experiences. Originating with the pressing of fresh clay “poultices” onto the stones of historical buildings and monuments, her works become records; recuperating and transmuting the intentional and residual aspects of her source material. Laferté Coutu has studied at Concordia University, the Bauhaus Universität Weimar, and Université du Québec à Montréal. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, South Korea and the UK.

Camara Taylor is an artist and — based in Glasgow. They tend to create still and moving images, texts, installations, events and discursive programmes that act as moments of stasis amidst sprawling research. Recurrent in the practice are: ambivalence; low frequency objection; mad methodologies; onto kinetics; spatial relations; ocean rumour; land/scape construction; and a playing with images/objects/happenings/utterances situated amidst black life in and out with Scotland. They have exhibited their work across the U.K.

Alexia Laferté Coutu and Camara Taylor will spend three months in residence at Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and Fonderie Darling respectively, developing their proposed work and connecting with their international peers. In addition to their time at the host institutions they will spend two weeks of their time in more rural surroundings with Camara visiting Gare de Matapédia and Alexia travelling to Arbroath to visit Hospitalfield House.

This is the first year of a three year exchange programme that aims to connect Scottish and Quebec based artists and organisations, facilitating cultural and knowledge exchange. The programme has been generously funded by the Conseil des arts de Montréal with support from Creative Scotland and British Council Scotland.
