Claire Astier

Claire Astier is interested in the forms of the common, its variations through time, analyzing the iterations of a recurring question in art: what presence is required of the collective, under what conditions can it be operating in the social and political space today? She is interested in the modalities of production as well as the forms of appearance of the works. Through her research, she addresses the limits of the work and its modes of appearance, collaboration and collective as a process creation and the deconstruction of the demonstration space. In this context, she observes the plastic responses that artists oppose to the widespread automation and pre-scripted spaces and wants her role as a curator to evolve in response to this situation. It is particularly narratives protocols and the idea of change and lability of spaces, works and status that is of interest to her, the fluctuations of ideas throughout history, and how subjects and societies are trying to situate themselves in a historical continuum.

Biography

A graduate in political anthropology before enrolling at the École du Magasin of Grenoble, Claire Astier built her career in the fields of contemporary art self-taught, working with artists, curators and directors of institutions. Without neglecting public institutions and museums, she is particularly involved in centres dedicated to emerging talent and the support and guidance of young artists. Claire Astier is based in Marseille, where she works as an independent curator and art critic.
