Filiations’ third evening will be your chance to discover the work of Dayna McLeod and Suzanne Joly. Invited by Jean-Sébastien Vague, who got to know McLeod’s work through her exhibition at La Centrale Powerhouse in 2014, the year she won the Powerhouse Prize, McLeod is known for her humoristic approach to identity, looked at through the lens of feminist and queer theories. Joly, selected by Karen Elaine Spencer, nourished Spencer’s imaginary since she saw her in conversation with chickens during a performance some years ago. The openness that characterized Joly’s action during that moment, never presuming of the possible answers she might get from her interlocutors, touched Spencer who uses this occasion to see her perform again. 

DAYNA MCLEOD

Dayna McLeod is a performance and video artist, living in Montreal. Her work uses humour, and capitalizes on exploiting the body’s social and material conditions using cabaret, duration, single channel video, and installation practices. She has won numerous awards, and is currently at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture at Concordia University. She is pursuing an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Humanities that combines studies in performance art, feminism, queer theory, age, and research-creation practices. Intimacy as a method of connecting with an audience is central to her performance practice. On the Place Publique, she will present the project Uterine Concert Hall with artists Nikki Forrest and Jackie Gallant, who will both do a DJ set approximatly 30 minutes. Uterine Concert Hall is a vaginal media project that features Dayna’s uterus as the scene of the performance and the instrument of its production. External concertgoers are invited to eavesdrop via stethoscope, on the faint echoes of the recital through the very flesh of her body. 

Jackie Gallant is a musician, video artist, composer and performer who creates and performs for dance, video and film. As a solo artist her work addresses and deconstructs pop culture with self-referential humor and subtle subversion.

Nikki Forrest is a Montreal based artist whose practice includes video, sound, drawing and installation projects. Her current work explores the improvisatory flow of ideas, materials and process emerging from an interdisciplinary studio practice, looking in particular at the intersection of perception, memory and technology.

SUZANNE JOLY 

Based in Lanaudières, Suzanne Joly has been using for 30 years performance and manoeuvre tactics as ways to enter the other’s space, public or private, inside or outside the perimeter of art. She uses what the context has to offer – location, people, objects – to inhabit the world differently. It is with the act of creation, often the result of a collective practice, that she wants to force the public to think and to act. She participated in Le Lieu’s first Biennale in Québec in 1990, and since then, she took part in numerous events organized by Inter and Folie/Culture, and did several residencies in Nice, Toronto, Sudbury, Montréal and in Québec. For Filiations, she will present the project Brothers with the help of her accomplices Audrey Pelletier and Josée Fafard.
