Simon Petepiece
Working directly with construction materials and processes, Simon Petepiece’s practice addresses the symbolic and phenomenological quality of architectural spaces. Creating works that combine installation, sculpture and drawing, he explores how the built environment records and reflects our cultural beliefs, values and history.
Materiality is foundational to Simon’s practice and his use of drywall and steel studs as both recognizable objects and a substrate. Using this received material palette, his work draws on a range of personal and archetypal subjects to imagine places that exist outside of a clear time or location. Central to his practice is a cyclical way of working where architectural elements and ideas shift back and forth between drawings, sculptures and installations, as objects from pictorial space become physical artifacts and vice versa.
In his recent projects, the work combines this contemporary material language with forms and details from religious spaces. Specifically exploring the iconography of Christian architecture and the interconnected relationship between devotional painting, sculpture and architecture.
