Lawrence Weiner
Born in 1942 in the Bronx, NY, Lawrence Weiner lives in New York and Amsterdam. He participates in public and private projects and exhibitions, maintaining that art is the empirical fact of the relationships of objects to objects in relation to human beings and not dependent upon historical precedent for either use or legitimacy.
The first presentation of his work was in Mill Valley, California, in 1960. He has participated in Documenta 5 (1972), 6 (1977), 7 (1982) and 13 (2012); Venice Biennale (2013, 2003, 1984, 1972); and Bienal de São Paulo (2006). Among his many honours are the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships (1976, 1983), a Guggenheim Fellowship (1994), a Wolfgang Hahn Prize (1995) and a Skowhegan Medal for Painting/Conceptual Art (1999). In 2013, he received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the Graduate Center, City University of New York. Weiner is represented by Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, and Lisson Gallery, London.
