Les caresses qui nous unissent : Florencia Sosa Rey

For the second Place Publique evening of the performance cycle Les caresses qui nous unissent, Fonderie Darling invites the public to discover a performance by Florencia Sosa Rey. Through memory and bodily sensitivity, the artist invites us to take an intimate journey and confront the socio-cultural baggage carried by the body. The evening continues with a DJ set by CP Simonise in the colors of the Black Summer '91 exhibition, in a vintage, danceable atmosphere.

FLORENCIA SOSA REY COMMENT RESTER

In the fall of 2023, Florencia Sosa Rey was beckoned to solitude in an artist residency in Matapédia, Gaspésie. The natural landscape that stretched out before her/them became symbols of culture, identity and choice. The river, especially, enacting change and borders, reflected the intimate journey of oneself as a foreigner (to a place) and invited larger contemplations on home and (un)belonging. In the performance Comment rester, Florencia delves into the ebb and flows of emotional and geographical distances, through the use of ice and fabrics to evoke the fluctuations of otherness, self and comfort.

Florencia Sosa Rey's multidisciplinary practice unfolds through a body, somatic approach. She articulates propositions about traces, memory and affect mainly through abstract drawing and performance. Considering nostalgia as a resource to address hybrid identities, Florencia pays particular attention to the spaces (physical and psychic) inhabited by distance in the transmission of knowledge and interpersonal ties.

Florencia Sosa Rey is a visual performance artist. Her personal and collaborative work has been presented in Montrea, Quebec, Toronto, Indiana (USA), and Iceland. In September 2023, Florencia's first solo exhibition In Search of Breathful Intimacies, curated by Ariane de Blois was presented at Plein sud. Sosa Rey has been awarded several grants by the Canada Council for the Arts and the conseil des arts et des letters du Québec. She holds a BFA from Concordia University and lives in Tiohtià:ke/ Moonyiang/ Montréal.

CP SIMONISE

Multidisciplinary artist Carl-Philippe Simonise joins us as DJ for the evening, offering a musical selection rooted in the early 1990s, the time period covered by Fonderie Darling's current exhibition, Black Summer '91.
