This first evening of performances aims to make tangible the influences and affinities of artists practicing this discipline. 

Adriana Disman

Adriana Disman is a performance art maker, thinker, and curator based in Toronto and Montreal. Her axis of creation is always the body. Her current solo practice engages with the almost-unseen, the minor, and performance's ability to amplify the micro. Her works have been presented in performance art spaces and contexts in Canada, the US, Europe, and India. Disman is the curator of LINK & PIN performance art series and director of 2016's Morni Hill's Performance Biennale in northern India. She was a long-time organizer for The School of Making Thinking (NY) and RATS9 Gallery (MTL). She holds an M.A. in Theatre and Performance Studies from York University and is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre (NYC). Disman gives workshops and guest lectures regularly and has taught at McGill, U of Toronto, and Abrons Art Centre, amongst others.

Adriana Disman's work aims to question the relationship between the engagement of the body and the power mechanisms that influence it. Working around the theme of self-mutilation, she’s interested in her ability to act with and on her own body. The artist hence claims a radical right to the ownership of her body, in a desire to urgently resist oppressive forces. For the performance, Adriana Disman challenges the connection between the inside and the outside of the body, and wonders how these two scales end up in constant cohabitation through games of translation.

Rachel Echenberg, Triptych

Rachel Echenberg is a visual artist who works in performance, sculpture, photo and video. Since 1992 Echenberg’s work has been exhibited, performed and screened across Canada as well as internationally in Belgium, Chile, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Morocco, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland and the United States. Rachel Echenberg currently teaches in the Fine Arts Department of Dawson College. She is vice-president and programming member of VIVA! art action as well as a board member of Optica, centre for contemporary art, both in Montreal. 

Rachel Echenberg’s work explores the porous treshold that exists between political, social and personnal spaces. The body becomes an imperfect perimeter underlined by the artist through a constant flux created by everyday situations. In the past years, Rachel Echenberg’s research was focused around the theme of the House both as tangible and psychological space. The performance artist notably works with her own family in order to analyze the social structures of cohabitationwithin which we are intimately connected and mutually alienated. For Triptych, Rachel Echenberg pursues her research through a performance with two members of her family and thus reveals the structure of her house without any physical representations.

Stéphanie Saint-Jean Aubre, Woman Warrior

Stéphanie St-Jean Aubre is an emerging multidisciplinary artist from Gatineau. After studying theatrical performance, she enrolls in Fine Arts program at Concordia University where she discovers screenprinting, a technique which will become central to her commercial and contemporay practices. Her work was exhibited at Studio sixty- six (Ottawa), Axenéo 7 (Gatineau), Centre d’exposition de Val-David (Val-David), l’Atelier de l’île (Val-David) as well as Carleton University Art Gallery (Ottawa).

Stéphanie Saint-Jean Aubre's production in anchored in notions of intimacy and in the anecdotal. With humor and poetry, she illustrates various mechanisms of validation, self-acceptance, and romanticization of everyday life  in a world where the gaze of the other is omnipresent. Setphanie works using an autobiographical approach : she presents her life as a story in which she can become a spectator. For Woman Warrior, Stéphanie St-Jean Aubre offers members of the audience the opportunity to meet her, one on one, in an isolated space. The performer becomes an object in the installation, a still but potentially unpredictable presence that the audience has to negociate with.
