Les caresses qui nous unissent : Geneviève Matthieu

Artist duo Geneviève Matthieu invites the public to journey into an imaginary world with their Danseprophétiqueàl'îlebizarre project, developed during a residency at Fonderie Darling. Blending visual art, performance, and installation, the duo suggests an exploratory experience that challenges traditional art conventions and centres around the human body. The public is encouraged to touch, manipulate, and move objects to shape an evolving narrative. To round off the evening, musical duo AM Trépanier and Alexandre Piral take us into a Franco-Quebec electro universe for a quirky DJ set.

A delicious Caribbean snack will be catered by Jeba Bowers Murphy.

GENEVIÈVE MATTHIEU / Danseprophétiqueàl’îlebizarre

At the intersection of body, material, dance, and music, Danseprophétiqueàl’Îlebizarre. Here, artists recontextualize large "movement-sculptures" resembling giant books, encouraging the audience to flip the pages.
This performance takes us on a journey through an initiatory tale that combines poetry, potato chip bag printing, the Steeves baby circle, health blankets, a power bar and portal, body books, a tracking projector, movement-sculptures, a 12-string major guitar, arsenic, electronic keyboard percussion pads, a stage floor, the songs of oblivion, a life devoid of us, all underscored by some training imagined by a private trainer and a butterfly. Like a prophetic dance, the duo aims to transform a sports routine into a repetitive performance akin to a mantra-like dance. Presented in the installation and inspired by contemporary dance, this performance pushes Geneviève and Matthieu to explore the spatiality of their bodies and to enhance their physical abilities.

Geneviève Matthieu is an artist duo formed in Rouyn-Noranda (Quebec, Canada) in the late 1990s. The duo has showcased their work at numerous exhibitions and events in Canada and Europe, including the Musée d'art de Joliette, Usine C (Montreal), Darling Foundry (Montreal), 7a*11d Festival (Toronto), Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Paris), La Capella (Barcelona) and actoral Festival (Marseille). In 2024, the duo was selected for a residency by the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec at Les Récollets in Paris, and in 2022, they won the 2-12 residency program at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. In 2023, they were shortlisted as a Quebec finalist for the Sobey Art Award presented by the National Gallery of Canada, and for the Prix en art actuel presented by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec in 2018.

AM TRÉPANIER ET ALEXANDRE PIRAL

The wettransfer/montjoies duo consists of artists and cultural workers, passionate about both new and old music. They love sounds that evoke both laughter and tears. Partners in both their musical and personal lives, are accustomed to collaborative performances. For this evening, they have prepared a selection of unique electro-Franco-Quebecois music as a tribute to the work of Geneviève and Matthieu: intellectual rigor, absurd humor, and spine-tingling.
